Basics of Typography and Tips on How to Make a Good One

Basics of Typography and Tips on How to Make a Good OneTypography, the word itself, is a merger of two Greek words that means form and writing. Basically, it refers to the art (form) of organizing and arranging text (writing) in order to relate the sense of the text. Basically, it is how we see an information passed on through a medium—television, magazine, newspaper and even websites. Typography can refer to the art an artwork is shown to promote its purpose of informing, persuading and engaging viewers from all walks of life.

Typography is important in such a way that how you choose your designs to be viewed by others builds the character and tone of your artwork. To explain further, try to assess the variations in meaning in one statement with different font styles and sizes as shown in the image below.

Therefore, the prowess of your design is exemplified best on how you do your typography.

Since you get the picture already, here are some common terms that complete the concept of typography.

1. Lines

Lines

There are five horizontal lines that guide a composition of a line of characters. These are:
  • a. Baseline – the line that the text sits on
  • b. Cap height – marks the top of capital letters
  • c. Ascender height – line that shows where the top of letters such as k and h touch. This is actually slightly higher than the capital line.
  • d. X-height (midline) – shows the height of lowercase letters (except for t or l or p, and the like)
  • e. Descender height (beardline) – portions of some characters that go below the baseline (p and y).

2. Leading

Leading

The distance of each line from the other affects the visual appeal of the text. In this case, leading refers to the amount of space from a line of text or another. Examine the examples below to see the importance of proper leading.

Example 1: Having a negative value for leading which causes the letters to almost overlap on each other from the first line to other greatly affects the intelligibility of your texts.

Example 2: The suggested value for leading is 120% of the type size.

Example 3: A 200% type size may not be ideal for your text since it consumes too much unnecessary space and further more the additional gray areas, slow down the pace when the text is read.

Remember to adjust your leading depending on the length of your statements. Slogans or taglines are usually paired with less leading since they contain very few words. Paragraphs, hence, are best seen and read the just the right kind of leading to prevent unintelligibility if the leading is less and reading latency if the leading is set too much.

3. Tracking

Tracking

It is also known as letter spacing which typically has same effects of leading to your texts, only this time it is in between each groups of characters. Examine the image below.

The tracking that is set to negative is called tight while the one with any value beyond 0 is called loose. Usually a longer line of characters has more loose tracking but it still depends on how you bring other elements on your text such as background, font color, font face, etc.

4. Kerning

Kerning

Oftentimes, there is confusion between tracking and kerning. If tracking refers to in-between groups of characters, kerning would be that miniscule space between the characters themselves. View the image below for reference.

Kerning is important to prevent distracting readers from any discrepancies created by uneven spacing in-between characters.

5. Alignment

Alignment

Alignment is important to achieve good typography because it portrays how organized the content is and it basically dictates where you can place different objects that will complete the theme of your design. There are different types of alignment and you can view corresponding images for further reference.

a. Flush Left (Ragged Right)
It refers to the natural way we read text based on Western culture since text is aligned to the left. Make sure that the line length is in good balance—meaning, they are not too similar, but also not too far apart.

b. Flush Right (Ragged Left)
This type has the text aligned to the right. This is very seldom seen and if used, oftentimes it is to create a contrast to the main body of text to add some variation to it.

c. Justified
It is commonly used in narratives wherein the start and end of text lines are both aligned to the left and right. Uneven spacing may arise though as one of the issues in an effort to maintain the alignment. There also some instances that programs hyphenate words at the end of text lines to keep the text justified which may disrupt reading pace.

d. Centered
This type has the text drawn to the center instead of the edges. This is commonly used in poetry verses. Choose the text in which you will use this alignment carefully because quite long centered texts may cause difficulty in reading. It is preferred to use this on 2-3 lines of text. If you pull it off, your design can look classy and elegant. To do this, make sure that the text area can accommodate multiple logical lines of text and that there is enough contrast between the line length to make the text inviting.

The terms presented are just some of the important elements in your typography. To incorporate them into practical application, we need to use Photoshop and Illustrator. To begin with, familiarize yourself with the two panels in Photoshop and Illustrator that deals with typography. These panels are Character Panel and Paragraph Panel. You can refer to the image below for further identification.

Basic Tips to make a Good Typography

Now that you know where in your programs you can work with typography, here are some basic tips to make a good one.

1. Determine the hierarchy of your information.

Create a priority list for the objects present on your design. Afterwards, assign appropriate typographical settings on each object/text based on their hierarchy in that last. For instance, the title, of course, needs to use bold-faced fonts, center alignment and larger spacings. In contrast, footnotes may have the smallest font size and less spacing since they are just additional information.

2. Make your typography consistent with your theme.

No matter how good your design looks like, it will go unnoticed if you have a contrasting typography with your theme. Simply put, it is impossible to use pastel colors on Halloween-inspired themes.

3. Experiment first and familiarize yourself with typography.

It is not enough that you know the concept, it’s more important how you “re-create” the concept itself. It only means that without proper practice and application, it would be difficult for you to work on typographies which will take up much of your time and effort. Do not attempt to create a design with permanent typography without being prepared. Try to obtain inspiration from previous works, incorporate it with your artwork and re-create it on your own trademark.

4. Rely on your good taste.

Complying with the rules has always been the right thing to do. However if you wish your work to stand out, try bending a few rules here and there. Your work will not yield outstanding results if you stay too much on the safe side. Let your imagination explore so you could have more inspiration in letting your creativity empower your skills in typography.

5. Criticize accordingly.

Observe the typography of some artworks and websites and try to look for mistakes in typography that somehow most designers have overlooked. Do learn from their mistakes and try not to emulate those mistakes.

This is essentially a free and online version of the most popular desktop image editor on the market – Adobe Photoshop.

All the basic features that are present in Photoshop can be found in Photoshop Express Editor as well.

Top 5 Tips on How to Take Amazing Travel Photos

Top 5 Tips on How to Take Amazing Travel PhotosPhotographs, the cliché goes, can capture a moment in time like no other. This is never more important than when travelling. A good photograph will bring back memories of the sights, sounds and smells of a faraway place. while giving others an idea of what it was like to be in foreign lands. Fortunately, learning to take good photographs is a skill that anyone can learn. With a little bit of instruction and practice, it’s possible to take world class travel photos. Here are five tips to help you take those amazing travel photos.

You may want to take a look at the following related articles
This article was brought to you by Journey Latin America, specialists in travel to Brazil, Argentina, Peru and many other countries in the South American continent.

Manage the lighting

Manage the lighting

Good lighting can be the difference between a good photo and a bad one. Ideally, light sources (such as lamps or the sun) should be behind the photographer rather than the subject of the photo. While a flash can be used to combat dark conditions, the results are often poor with unnatural looking lighting ruining the photo. Avoid using the flash if possible and move around until you find a position where the sun or other lighting source is behind you. Then, line up the shot and snap away.

Framing and composition

Framing and composition

The most common mistake that novice photographers make is to place the subject of the photo right in the middle of the photograph. This causes the subject to take over the photograph, creating an imbalanced looking photograph. Ideally, the subject and the background should be balanced in such a way that they are both equally represented in a photograph.

The easiest way to accomplish this is by sticking to the ‘rule of thirds’. When taking a photograph, imagine that the viewfinder has three horizontal and three vertical lines drawn onto it and frame the shot so that the subject of the photograph is placed on one of the intersections between the lines.

Try lots of angles and take lots of shots

Try lots of angles and take lots of shots

In the pre-digital camera world, every shot had to be meticulously constructed because there was very little room for error. Nowadays, digital cameras are capable of holding tens of thousands of high quality photographs, meaning it’s possible to take hundreds of shots in a single location and pick out the best. Experiment with different angles and try shooting both horizontal and vertical shots. Zoom in, zoom out. Take shots from the left and shots from the right. Then, once you get to your computer, simply choose the best photos and delete the bad ones.

Use the manual settings

Use the manual settings

Manual settings on a photograph allow for more nuanced control over your shooting technique. The main three settings are the shutter speed, the aperture setting and the ISO settings.

The shutter speed indicates how long the camera shutter will be open for. The longer it is opened, the more light the lens is exposed to. Generally, photographs should be taken with higher shutter speeds as using lower shutter speeds can result in blurry photos. That said, slow shutter speed, when used in combination with a tripod for stability, can result in result in some stunning low light shots.

The aperture setting determines how much light is let into the camera when the lens is open. In situations where there is too much light, a lower aperture setting can help to control the light allowing for a better photograph. The aperture setting also determines how much of a photograph is in focus and how much is out of focus. This can be useful for creating shots where a subject is in focus but the background is slightly blurred and out of focus.

The ISO setting determines how sensitive your camera is to light. When using a high ISO setting, lights will appear stronger and brighter. This can be useful in dark conditions where lighting is minimal. High ISO settings can, however, reduce the amount of detail present in a photograph. Generally, for most settings, a medium ISO setting is best.

The manual camera settings may seem intimidating at first, but through experimentation, they can be mastered and used to shoot better photographs.

Don’t get the same shots as everyone else

Don’t get the same shots as everyone else

People often rush to the same places to take the same photographs, leading to copycat photographs and feelings of déjà vu when looking at photos others that others have taken. Instead, when visiting a new place, try to capture it from your own unique perspective rather than the perspective of someone else. Examine the surroundings and try to find a unique and interesting place to shoot from.

Conclusion

The basics of photography are easily learned, but the key to taking good photos is to practise! Use your camera as often as possible and, over time, the basics will become ingrained and, who knows, one day your travel photographs may end up in the National Geographic.

How to Craft and Design a Creative Coming Soon Page

How to Craft and Design a Creative Coming Soon PageQuite recently, our company received a project that implied designing a few "Coming Soon" pages for a client with the purpose of pre-launching a service package. In case you are not familiar with the concept of these webpages, let's just say that they constitute an excellent teaser to draw the attention of the public and keep them on their toes until the final product is ready to be launched.

In other words, they act like movie or game trailers. However, while we can all agree that trailers are the singular best way to introduce a movie or a game to the public, can the teaser webpage function equally well? The answer is yes, as long as the "Coming Soon" page is created properly and includes elements that can actually present an interest for the audience.

In other words, they need to be memorable, viral, desirable and able to collect viewer's contact details. While the vast majority of existing teaser webpages will have two or even three of these characteristics, few can incorporate all four of them. But let's discuss the benefits of the "Coming Soon" pre-launch page.

You may want to take a look at the following related articles:
Hey, I am Jess and my daily work involves web design in Gold Coast. In my spare time, I love helping new aspirants in the field with tips and tricks of this profession.

My company sells high quality products, why do I need a teaser webpage?

Yes, that may be true, but are you sure that your audience knows that? Or more likely, are you one hundred percent certain that they will be familiar with your new line of products right after the launch? I consider that raising awareness regarding your new watch collection for example a few months in advance is the best way to ensure that your audience hears about it in time. Some don't always have the cash on the spot so they may need to start saving for the purchase.

In addition to that, the anticipation generated will also work in your favor and you can start reaping the benefits the moment your product goes live. The most relevant example to what the climate of anticipation can achieve in terms of marketing is Blizzard's newest release, Diablo III, a game that you've probably heard about even if you are not exactly a hardcore RPG enthusiast.

How to Craft and Design a Creative Coming Soon Page

In short, Blizzard managed to sell 3.5 millions of copies within 24 hours of the launch thanks to the carefully planned teaser campaign that lasted over the course of more than 10-11 years. But I digress, let's go back to the guidelines of creating an efficient "Coming Soon" webpage, starting with the aforementioned characteristics.

Giving your webpage personality and making it memorable

Ensuring that the viewer will immediately make the mental association between the teaser webpage and your brand is one of the most important aspects. In order to achieve this goal, utilizing the icons, logos, styles and colors present on your company's main website is the best course of action.

Giving your webpage personality and making it memorable

However, in the eventuality that your company does not have a really strong presence on the market or an extensive clientele, then the attractive design comprising of powerful contrasts and subtle color-combinations embedded in a refined background and underlining your logo can work wonders. Moreover, introducing various gimmicks like CSS animations, linear storytelling or intriguing transitions between pictures or elements will also work in your advantage.

Making the "Coming Soon" page viral with the help of social networks

Making the "Coming Soon" page viral with the help of social networks

Regardless of how memorable your teaser page may be, it will fail to produce the expected results if people don't know about its existence. In order to introduce the page to the public, the social networks are your biggest ally. We're not talking only about sharing the page on the social networks, but also broadening its scope by determining your clients to share it with their contacts. You can do that by providing worthwhile incentives for those who bring your page the highest number of signups for example.

Using the teaser webpage to explain the products

Using the teaser webpage to explain the products

If the incentives you offer in order to make the page viral are related to the product that is about to be released, then the public needs to know what that product does beforehand. Otherwise, they may not view the motivational gifts valuable enough to even bother with sharing the page or gathering signups, making the whole process an exercise in futility.

Gathering contact data

Gathering contact data

The potential of obtaining specialized leads via the viral teaser page is enormous, but don't forget to ensure that you have a way of storing these contact details for later use. While they are not particularly useful prior to the launch of the product, they will definitely prove invaluable later on.
